Stagnancy: 5 Reasons Why We Get Stuck

April 28, 2016 By Uncoveries

“Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.”

– Fyodor Dostoyevskey

We’ve all been there, knee-deep in a swamp that’s steadily and slowly enveloping you in near darkness. While you sense the importance of struggling your way to shore, the silhouettes of unknown dangers lurking beyond create a stronger feeling of wariness. It’s the reel of the same old song that goes on and on. It’s the hollowness of fear, the heaviness of despair, the sinking feeling of inaction.

Many of us can relate to some version of stagnancy in our lives—whether it was overstaying in a situation that was no longer fitting, trying to make things the way it used to be or delaying an important decision to the intangible future.

We’re all aware the convenient path of least resistance often leads us down to stagnancy. But it doesn’t mean we’re immune. I’ve certainly succumbed many times, falling for the alluring comfort and slow suffocation in spite of being someone who strives for personal growth in my life.

Embracing A Life of Experience and Freedom

April 10, 2016 By Uncoveries

As I’m writing this, I’m sitting in the Dominican Republic with my husband. We’ve been here since the fifth, and it’s been so amazing that we’ve extended our stay an extra four days.

The weather is perfection.

It’s 80 degrees every day with a breeze that rustles the palm fronds and balances out the heat and moments of stillness. The Airbnb condo we’re staying at is modern and gorgeous, and located in a small town near La Romana on the Caribbean side of the Dominican Republic.

Lessons Relearned: Allowing the Unknown to Unfold

March 23, 2016 By Uncoveries

I thought it’d be easier this time around, but I was wrong.

These past two weeks, I’ve found renewed value in an article I wrote about the year after my sabbatical. This comes at a time as I’m transitioning into new possibilities in contract work.

It turns out, I could use some reminders of lessons I’ve already learned to be true.

7 Lessons Learned The Year After My Sabbatical

January 18, 2016 By Uncoveries

This is the last article of the series on what I learned and what I’d recommend from quitting my job to take a six-month sabbatical (without another job in sight). In my previous post, I shared nine areas I decluttered as I focused on my version of a high quality life. Below, I reflect on the following lessons learned the year after my sabbatical.

“Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience.”

– Paulo Coelho

In early 2015, my six-month sabbatical drew to an end.

I’d spent the last three months building up the framework of and talking to people about Uncoveries, but as my funds drew low, I was once again faced with the question of how to earn a living.

The following months were frustrating. I went through a bad rut during that period as my limited perspective led me down a path that my intuition knew wasn’t right for me. But all things are transitory and pass in time.

These seven lessons learned the year after my sabbatical were invaluable.

I wouldn’t have learned them without taking the leap and experiencing what I did. My hope is these learnings will help you in making brave leaps or changes in your life.

4 Reasons To Be A Little Foolish

August 11, 2015 By Uncoveries

Thinking back, I can’t help but shake my head. Wow, was I naïve.

Just 6 months ago, I had idealistic expectations of how being a freelancer and entrepreneur was going to go. I planned out big goals, action steps and milestones. I thought things were going to work out a certain way by this time and that.
