Build: Forging the Path

June 6, 2016 By Uncoveries

Build Forging a Path

The destination is a marvelous sight to behold.

When we’ve set sight on a direction of growth and genuine excitement, it’s time to build, forging the path to our goal. Whether it’s trying out a new fitness regimen, changing careers, or embarking on a new relationship—building a new part of our life is when enthusiasm gradually gives way to muscle, mindset, patience and perseverance.

Moving from Explore to the Build phase is the beginning of a trek that can last from months to many years. This is where you hone intent, lay out a plan and execute the steps. It’s the practical, hardworking and laborious part of the journey. Build generally starts off with high energy and optimism with a dash of necessary foolishness. In new territory, we’re bound to be naïve in certain areas as we research, learn and figure things out as we go along.

Explore: Growing into the New

Signs of growth eventually emerge from the space we’ve erased.

After a pause that’s almost always longer than we’d like, we find ourselves squinting in the brightness of possibility. We’ve had to grieve and erase a part of us that was no longer fitting, and the heaviness has slowly subsided. Through erasing, we’ve created space for the exploration to come.

Where we saw ending and loss, we now see hope for the new.

The Truth About Struggle and Meaningful Progress

March 3, 2016 By Uncoveries

“There is scarcely any passion without struggle.”

– Albert Camus

Struggle has a bad rap. If asked, most of us would likely opt against struggle, preferring to avoid it if we can.

Yet, at the same time, we can’t seem to escape it. Struggle is everywhere. Unavoidable.

Many of us are familiar with struggle as a part of our lives. We understand that anything worth having requires a level of hard work and consistency. Much more, it’s reinforced through our parents, authority figures and general society.

We’re told to work hard and put our nose to the grindstone. 52% of us are dissatisfied with our jobs yet we still stay in them. When something takes longer or more work than we expect, we’re told it’s part of the game and that dues need to be paid.

But for what? Is it worth it?

9 Areas To Declutter For A High Quality Life

January 12, 2016 By Uncoveries

This is the fifteenth article following The Irony of Quitting My Job to Take a Sabbatical, the first in a series on what I learned and what I’d recommend from quitting my job to take a six-month sabbatical (without another job in sight). This week, I expand on how decluttering helped change my life by sharing the 9 main areas of focus.

“Simplicity involves unburdening your life, and living more lightly with fewer distractions that interfere with a high quality life, as defined uniquely by each individual.”

– Linda Breen Pierce

When you’re busy running from one thing to the next, it’s easy to miss a lot of things.

Clutter tends to hide more clutter.

8 Considerations Prior To Taking The Leap

December 13, 2015 By Uncoveries

This is the ninth article following The Irony of Quitting My Job to Take a Sabbatical, the first in a series on what I learned and what I’d recommend from quitting my job to take a six-month sabbatical (without another job in sight). In my last post, I shared two reasons why you may want to keep new ideas under wraps. Here I share eight areas I kept in mind when it came to considerations prior to taking the leap.
8 Considerations Prior To Taking The Leap

“Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes; but no plans.”

– Peter F. Drucker

With the inner confidence of quitting my job and taking a sabbatical established, some planning began taking place.

I found myself relaxing in the assurance of quitting in July. Even though the end date was seemingly far off, there was a light at the end of the tunnel to work towards. I noticed positive shifts in my mood and behavior at work and at home. My mind started planning and figuring out logistics—all of what happens when you commit to change.

Here are 8 considerations prior to taking the leap, including ones that I wished I had considered in retrospect.

2 Reasons To Keep New Ideas Under Wraps

December 7, 2015 By Uncoveries

This is the eighth article following The Irony of Quitting My Job to Take a Sabbatical, the first in a series on what I learned and what I’d recommend from quitting my job to take a six-month sabbatical (without another job in sight). In my last post, I talked about the importance of patience in committing to true change. Life, travel and the start of the holidays got the best of me, and now three weeks later, I’m back to share a couple reasons why very few people knew about my plans to quit to take a sabbatical.
2 Reasons to Keep New Ideas Under Wraps

“Every really new idea looks crazy at first.”
– Alfred North Whitehead

How ironic that my last post was about patience, and these past few weeks have put me to the test.

With traveling and other factors, I found myself overwhelmed, pressed for time and seemingly unable to put words down on a page. Times like this happen, and when it does, I’ve found it best to respect my limits and move on.

Amidst everything going on, I also realized I neglected to mention a key aspect—the role others played while I brought my idea of quitting my job to take a sabbatical from fruition to realization. So here goes!

New ideas are exhilarating, full of promise, and the best ones may seem a little crazy or even absurd.

4 Reasons To Be A Little Foolish

August 11, 2015 By Uncoveries

Thinking back, I can’t help but shake my head. Wow, was I naïve.

Just 6 months ago, I had idealistic expectations of how being a freelancer and entrepreneur was going to go. I planned out big goals, action steps and milestones. I thought things were going to work out a certain way by this time and that.
