There’s one reason why dreams stay dreams for many of us.
And it’s not because of fear.
I used to think it was fear. If you had asked me five years ago, that’s what I would have answered.

It’s an interesting shift when people see that what you’ve spent years building up to is beginning to pay off. They start asking about it, and then ultimately ask for your answer to the million-dollar question.
My husband and I have spent the past several months in Arizona and are now back in Minneapolis. As a few friends have put it, we are basically young “snow birds,” except as I point out every time, we are not “retired” and very much still need to work to make money. We’ve managed to make enough to spend the mild winter in Arizona and the summer in beautiful, green Minnesota this year.
The questions are generally around “So what do you guys actually do?” to “Is it really for real?” and “So, how do you make enough money?” They may not ask in those exact words, but that’s really what they’re asking. As if these questions are something that can be covered in casual, passing conversation.

Three years ago, I started down on a dimly lit path that seemed very much less traveled, surrounded by many unknowns.
Step by step, I put one foot in front of another. Some days, it was easier. Other times, I inched forward haltingly. During the darkest portions of the path, I froze, wondering where I was going and if I was making the wrong decision.
I didn’t realize at the time my path was no different than before. That the winding path up ahead was meant to be for only one—myself—as it had been all along.

Getting to true, lasting change isn’t sexy.
It’s usually the opposite. Monotonous, ordinary, and seemingly not worth mentioning. But not mentioning it would be a shame.

My husband and I spent this past New Year’s Eve running errands, cleaning the house and doing a quiet, mini-celebration at home. I was feeling particularly ambitious that day and advocated for these somewhat lame, but productive household activities despite some reluctance on his end.
As we clinked our toasting flutes a few seconds past midnight, my husband grudgingly admitted it was nice to start the new year in a clean home.
This got me thinking about balancing planning and inspiration—what we often experience day-to-day in our lives.

As I’m sitting by the poolside on a condo rooftop in City Center, Las Vegas, I keep on thinking about how crazy life can be, and how quickly circumstances can change when setting intentions and letting go. Our short, synchronistic stay right on the strip—as pretentious and flashy of a reputation the city may have—feels oddly appropriate.
It’s a larger-than-life reminder that anything can happen. While there are inevitable losses along the way, there’s also the chance to win big with some strategic risks, persistence and a little bit of luck.

It’s an area I grapple with—even after years of working on it.
