Reassess: The First Step of Change

May 6, 2016 By Uncoveries

A remarkable number of people dislike being alone with their thoughts. Like truly alone—without a phone, TV, laptop or tablet to help pass the time.

What about you? As an introvert who recharges by being alone, I enjoy the time I spend by myself. But if I were to count the minutes that I spend without being occupied, distracted and entertained by technology, they add up to far less than I think.

The constant distraction has a cost.

The Most Important Aspect Of Your Life

December 31, 2015 By Uncoveries

This is the thirteenth article following The Irony of Quitting My Job to Take a Sabbatical, the first in a series on what I learned and what I’d recommend from quitting my job to take a six-month sabbatical (without another job in sight). Last time, I shared 10 ways to foster creativity in your daily life. Today, I’m sharing what I’ve learned to be the most important yet the most often neglected aspect of many peoples’ lives.
The Most Important Aspect of Your Life

“The only really important thing, at the end of the day, is your health. If you haven’t got that, then all the money in the world isn’t going to bring you happiness.”

– John Caudwell

I used to be really good at prioritizing other things before taking care of myself.

This was not only mentally—in terms of self-esteem, self-talk and other mental traps I fell into—but also physically.

I didn’t exercise regularly during college and the first few years of work. Although I never indulged in too many sweets due to my savory tooth, I didn’t eat well. Likely too much pizza and tator tots, as much as I’d like to believe otherwise.

During the most hectic periods of work, I’d continue working without getting up for a glass of water or bathroom break until hours later. I’d purposefully ignore my body’s signs. And so at some point my body stopped sending signals, which wasn’t a good thing.

A recipe headed towards disaster.

Feeling Stuck? Here’s How To Get Out Of A Rut

September 3, 2015 By Uncoveries

How To Get Out Of A Rut

Sometimes, you’re just not feeling it. You feel stuck. And you’re wondering how to get out of a rut.

The simple steps seem gargantuan. You can’t bring yourself to do much of anything, although you’ve tried it all: listening to upbeat music, drinking lots of caffeine, bribing yourself with treats. Or you find yourself doing everything except getting that important thing-that-must-not-be-named done.

The struggle is real.

I’ve been there. Many times. The worst of them seem to be during transitory periods of my life.

Sometimes, it took all the self-control and resolve I had to complete the littlest of tasks. Sometimes no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t bring myself to take action. There were mornings I could barely drag myself out of bed. The mind can be very convincing in its variations of procrastination, avoidance and preservation.

After coming out of a particularly existentially challenging time about half a year ago, a friend asked me, so how’d you do it?

7 Ways to Make the Most of Each Day

August 5, 2015 By Uncoveries

Each day is a gift, a new beginning, another opportunity to be fully embraced.

Yet many of us don’t make the most of each day. By packing it full of every possible to-do list item, meeting, commitment, email and phone notification, the hours fly by and we feel somewhat shortchanged as we turn in for the night.

Why? Because it’s easier said than done to make the most of each day. Especially when you feel like you’re behind on multiple projects with an overwhelming number of obligations, errands and tasks.

Life could be so simple, but we are masters in complicating our lives—to the point there are no moments savored, no progress made on what’s truly important and a deficit of what brings joy in your life. Sound familiar?

The 7 Myths of Happiness, Part 6

July 20, 2015 By Uncoveries

Many of us have spent time stuck in the trickiest of the myths of happiness, focused internally but unable to gain a sense of meaningful progress.

Following my initial realization while I was in Prague, I realized something that led me down the less-traveled path I’m on today.
