A Contrary Perspective On Vulnerability

Vulnerability comes from the stuff that you’re certain will cost you. It’s a sickening, sinking feeling, one that threatens to slit you open, baring the most delicate insecurities into the open.

The discomfort you feel from vulnerability is excruciating at times. It’s commonly paired during times of growth, when you’re more weak and susceptible. It’s when all the sources of your Kryptonite combine together to attack. It’s when you wonder if the whole world is against you as you try your best to break away from the feelings consuming you.

It’s little wonder why we shy away from vulnerability—to our own detriment.

The popularized idea of happiness is free-spirited and effortless; it is less often associated with concentration, hard work or sacrifice. In addition to believing the myth of happiness is a must, we also have this idea that happiness is easy. There is often an odd sense of entitlement and lackadaisicalness that’s assumed with happiness. Get Out of Your Head: 5 Ways To Live in the Present

Being in the present moment is one of the simplest yet most difficult concepts to master. Most of us spend far more of our lives in the past or future than we realize, constantly swinging from thought to thought, the incessant self-chatter preventing us from living fully in the present.

We think about what we did, said, should have done, or what we might do tomorrow, the next week, or (for the extreme planners) the next year. Instead of fully experiencing the beauty and joy we have in our lives now, we’re distracted by the illusion in our heads.

We fool ourselves into experiencing a diminished version of our lives when we’re too busy scanning behind or ahead of where we’re currently standing.
